Gender-Affirming Perioperative Care

This course explores the role of primary care providers in supporting transgender, Two-Spirit, and non-binary (TTNB) patients throughout the perioperative journey for gender-affirming genital surgeries. The course provides an overview of surgical options available for lower body surgeries and emphasizes preoperative considerations and strategies for optimizing patient’s physical health and emotional, psychological, and social well-being to enhance surgical outcomes and recovery. It addresses key postoperative considerations for genital surgeries, including pain management, constipation, and emotional well-being, ensuring comprehensive, patient-centered care.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify surgical options available for gender-affirming lower body surgeries.
  2. Explain the role of primary care providers in supporting patients throughout the perioperative journey.
  3. Describe preoperative considerations and strategies for optimizing patients’ physical health, mental wellbeing, and general preparedness for surgery and recovery.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of common postoperative considerations for genital surgeries, including pain management, constipation, and emotional well-being.
  5. Navigate patient and clinical resources available for preparing care providers, patients, and their supports.
